Our January speaker was Paul Mimeault who spoke on CO and smoke detectors and winter safety tips for seniors. We have had three dozen applicants so far for fuel assistance and have sent out $2,400 in Butterworth funds at $200 per household. We will need 260 41 cent stamps for mailing the newsletter and supplies for the office. The deadline for items to be included in the newsletter is 2/14/2008. On 1/30/08 I attended a GSSSI meeting in Wilbraham where we were updated on what’s new. There will soon be funding for mental health referrals for seniors we serve. Laurie Cassidy will be coming for an outreach visit on Monday, Feb. 25th and will come to lunch and hear the boys from Falcetti.

No report.

In January, 580 contacts made, 68 seniors served, 164 attended Senior Center, 80 attended congregate meals and the balance includes cards & games (54), exercise (31), senior tax work off program (64), One pot meals (35), No sew blankets and cards for soldiers (32), Speakers (20) and other.

Corinne Lavallee and her volunteers are still working on “no-sew blankets” for service men. ?An Arthritis Foundation exercise class is held every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.  Cribbage is held each Thursday at 1:00 p.m.  Computer classes for seniors are available upon request.  All computers are operational and may be used by seniors anytime the center is open.  The AVADA program has been changed from 3/13/08 to 3/5/08 at 1:00 p.m. On Feb. 25 Falcetti will have music and a sing along. Movies are shown on Thursday afternoon. Starting on February 12, a class in making of hats, mittens for second graders will be held. Thanks to the Friends of Holland Seniors for donating supplies. Arrangements for the blood pressure clinic have been finalized, the first clinic will be held on Feb. 25 at 11:30 a.m. and thereafter on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 11:30. Motion made, seconded and approved to have the Senior Center open on Memorial Day, May 26 after the parade as we did last year and to have the flag burning ceremony on June 14.

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock and Harold Hewinson.
Year to date, $2,198.63 has been charged to the Senior Center, $1,492.40 to the School, $490.00 to the Tax office and $202.50 to the Assessors office.

Ansul system has been inspected. Inspector indicated a Type K extinguisher be available in addition to the regular ABC type. When we get a letter from the Fire Department indicating the need for this to meet code, we will contact Forish to furnish this item. Motion made, seconded and approved to have Paul purchase pads for chair legs. Cost approximately $46.00 and to write letter to Brian Johnson requesting Bituminous concrete top material on the parking lot to prevent break-up of chip seal from winter conditions. He indicated that this could come from chapter 90 funds.
Ansul system found to be o.k. by the inspector but that we were in non compliance without a K class extinguisher. If a fire did happen under the top of the grill the ansul system would not work, need type K. Approval given to purchase new glass coffee pots and basket.
All of the above reports were accepted by the Council on Aging.

Memo from Nancy Talbot requesting use of our large room for a baby shower was approved by the COA. We will inspect the room after its use to insure it is left as they found it. A copy of selectmen’s meeting of 1/23/2008 was distributed that indicated a need for a volunteer to represent Holland at S.C.M. Elderbus.

 CORRESPONDENCE – Distributed as received.
