Public Information Bulletin for Immediate Release: 10/21/2013
Our regional dispatch center recently received several reports of a black bear sighting in the area. The first reports were received on Friday 10/18 in the Vinton Rd and Butterworth Rd area, followed by a reported sighting on Over The Top Rd and Island Rd during the morning hours of Saturday 10/19. We also received a report of a sighting on Leno Rd late Saturday night and on Bennett Ln late Sunday night, 10/20.
Local and State Police Departments are advised by the Commonwealth to advise those callers who see black bears to “leave the animal alone and remind pet owners to keep their dogs under control. Keep crowds away and avoid following the animal. Pursuit not only stresses the animal but it adds the risk of having a bear chased out into traffic or into a group of bystanders. In most situations, the animal will fade back into the forest”.
Also, bears are attracted to edible items such as bird seed and trash left outside, and evidently pumpkins too as the Bennett Ln caller stated the bear was enjoying his pumpkin. Please secure your bird feeders and trash, especially at night.
