National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

The Holland Police Department will be participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) nationwide, one-day collaborative prescription drug take-back initiative, to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from homes. This will take place on Saturday, October 27th, 2018 at the Holland Town Hall Community Room at 27 Sturbridge Rd, between 10AM and 1PM.

This national initiative will provide an opportunity for the public to surrender pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction. Expired, unused, or unwanted controlled substances in our homes are a potential source of supply for the increasing abuse of pharmaceutical drugs in the United States and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety every day.

The collected medications will be disposed of by Covanta Energy, at several of their Energy-from-Waste facilities located throughout New England. These facilities convert the pharmaceutical waste collected into clean, renewable energy for use by local communities. Covanta has been a valued and indispensable partner of this endeavor, since its inception in October 2010, and has destroyed and converted over 725,000 pounds of pharmaceutical waste collected over fourteen drug take-back events.
